SBS refers to paper and paperboard made from a particular pulping method. The letters stand for Solid Bleach Sulphate, sometimes called Solid Bleached Sulphate.

• Starting at the back, Sulfate refers to the Kraft (or Craft) pulping method in which wood chips are cooked at high temperatures and pressures in an alkaline solution that frees the individual cellulose fibers from which paper is made, from the organic glue, called lignin, the holds them together to form wood.

• Bleached refers to one of several possible chemical processes used to remove most of the color from the cellulose, making the individual fibers nearly transparent, and a sheet formed from them appear white.

• Finally, Solid refers to the fact that the sheet is comprised virtually 100% of those bleached cellulose fibers. The finished sheet has a relatively low recycled content and contains mostly new (virgin) fibers. A coating, typically clay based, is applied to smooth the surface and provide other desirable characteristics for printing.

SBS is often used in food, health and beauty aids, software, cosmetics and other packaging applications where the requirements of the final package justify the extra cost of this type of material. Retail packaging is the most common application because marketers can count on bright white backgrounds for detailed promotional and product graphics to attract the customers' eyes (and dollars).

SBS is especially effective when used with countertop point of sale displays. It allows the package designers to take advantage of a full range of color and coating options to help the product packages stand out from the other items sharing its shelf space or counter-top real estate.

SBS is sometimes used as the top layer in a package or box made from a corrugated combination where its brilliant white surface and exceptional printability help merchandise the package or box contents. We do not manufacture or sell raw solid bleach sulphate cardboard material.
